Foodsmart

Chief Technology Officer

Hybrid
FoodsmartSan Francisco

About Foodsmart Foodsmart is the leading telenutrition and foodcare platform, serving more than 3 million members across employer-sponsored health plans, Medicaid managed care organizations, Medicare Advantage plans, and commercial insurers. Backed by a national network of registered dietitians, the platform pairs personalized nutrition care with a benefits marketplace that drives measurable, lasting health outcomes. In 2024, TPG's The Rise Fund invested $200M into Foodsmart. We are in a high-growth phase where technology is a direct driver of commercial results, member experience, and clinical impact. Our published outcomes include 42% of food-insecure members becoming food-secure within six months, meaningful weight loss and HbA1c improvement at 24 months, and an NPS of 86. The Opportunity This is a hands-on CTO role for a leader who stays close to the work and builds alongside the team. We are building a focused, fast-moving engineering organization at a moment when the business needs technology to move faster, ship higher-quality products, and translate directly into commercial, clinical, and member value. We recently moved to a pod-based operating model and brought on a strong Chief Product Officer who will be the CTO's closest counterpart in building and shipping products. Over the past year we have invested in a strong foundational and data layer, and we have stood up a pod-based operating model that has meaningfully accelerated our product development lifecycle. The next CTO inherits an infrastructure and a working delivery model, and a clear runway to build on it and ship products that matter, rather than starting from scratch. We run an engineering organization across a US-based team and a newly deployed offshore team in India. A core part of the CTO's mandate is to develop the long-range plan for domestic and offshore staffing, shaping how and where the organization grows as we scale. This is also a rare moment to shape what a transformative consumer-driven healthcare business can do with AI. We are looking for someone energized by the opportunity to use AI not only to accelerate how we build, but to create entirely new service offerings and new forms of value for members and partners. Beyond product, this CTO will be a leader in a broad organizational transformation toward becoming a truly AI-enabled company, applying the technology across how the whole business operates. Foodsmart exists to bring foodcare to underserved populations and to take on some of the country's hardest problems: access to affordable, healthy food and changing behaviors to support sustainably healthier lives. The right leader is genuinely motivated by that mission and believes technology is how we deliver on it at scale. We are looking for a builder: someone with a real fire in the belly, who loves being close to the work, has a strong bias for action, and holds themselves and their team to a high standard. This person thinks about technology in terms of the outcomes it produces and brings the urgency of a startup to a company at scale. What You Will Own First 12 Months — Outcomes Get and stay close to the work. Establish yourself as a leader who is directly engaged in the product day to day, so quality issues are caught early, decisions reach closure quickly, and urgency is felt across the whole organization. Deliver a step-change in product and interface quality. Put in place the standards, ownership, and follow-through that eliminate recurring member- and client-facing defects, so fixes hold the first time. Build a true partnership with the CPO and the broader business. Operate as one product-and-engineering leadership unit, converting a shared roadmap into shipped software with clear trade-offs, realistic capacity, and predictable delivery. Make delivery visible and accountable. Stand up lightweight, real cadences — weekly shipped-work demos, engineering metrics, and a simple capacity view — that build business and board confidence without heavy process. Build and retain a high-caliber team. Assess, develop, and level the engineering, data, IT, and security organization, and attract the talent needed to scale, while managing infrastructure cost against benchmarks. Set the domestic and offshore staffing strategy . Develop the long-range plan for the US and India-based organization, shaping how and where the team grows to balance capability, cost, and speed as we scale. Make AI a real productivity and product advantage. Move the organization from talking about AI to shipping with it — in the development process and in the member and partner experience — with pragmatic judgment about where it adds value. Keep the platform secure and compliant. Ensure security, IT, and infrastructure continue to meet HIPAA, SOC 2, and the standards expected of a healthcare platform at scale. Ongoing Scope Full ownership of Engineering, Data, IT, and Security across the US and India-based organization. Technical vision mapped directly to business strategy and commercial outcomes. The health, standards, and cost efficiency of the software development organization. Reliability, performance, and scalability of the web and mobile platform serving members and partners. Who you are The behaviors below are the ones that matter most for this role and this stage. We are being deliberately specific because fit here is defined as much by how someone leads as by what they have built. Must-Haves Mission-driven — genuinely energized by the problem we are solving; who believes in bringing foodcare to underserved populations and is motivated by using technology to expand access to affordable, healthy food and help people build sustainably healthier lives. A hands-on builder who leads from inside the work, with a real fire in the belly and a strong bias for action; close to the product, the team, and the details, and stays hands-on as the organization scales. Strong consumer technology experience and a record of building commercially viable products , with a track record of shipping consumer or consumer-grade experiences that customers love and that move the business. An accountable owner who owns outcomes end to end, drives decisions to closure, holds themselves and their team to a high standard, and does not deflect accountability to other teams. Brings urgency to what matters most. A genuine product partner, energized by working with a strong Chief Product Officer and other business leaders; sees product and engineering as a single delivery unit. Business-minded; prioritizes the work that drives business impact, speaks in terms of outcomes rather than activity and makes clear trade-offs against commercial and clinical goals. A talent magnet and builder of teams who can attract, assess, develop, and retain excellent technical talent, and who sets and holds a high standard across the organization. An excellent communicator, written and verbal, able to translate between technical and business audiences and build alignment across the executive team and the board. Fluent and pragmatic on AI, with early-adopter instincts with the judgment to apply AI where it creates leverage in product and development, and the ambition to help lead the company's broader transformation into a truly AI-enabled business. Strongly Preferred Healthcare or digital health experience, and comfort with the compliance and security realities of the space (HIPAA, SOC 2). Experience scaling engineering in a growth-stage, PE- or VC-backed company, with an appreciation for cost discipline alongside growth. Experience leading distributed engineering organizations across US and offshore teams, and building the staffing strategy for both. Experience with two-sided marketplace or multi-stakeholder platforms. A self-aware, feedback-seeking growth mindset, and a kind, collaborative style that fits our values. Experience Typically 15+ years of relevant industry experience, including direct responsibility for setting org structure and technical vision across multiple products, and a track record of leading and coaching engineering organizations through scale. What matters most is not the size of the largest team led, but a demonstrated pattern of staying close to the work, shipping quality product, and driving commercial outcomes in partnership with product. How we work Three commitments define our culture. We put the customer first , starting with the member and working backwards to deliver experiences that earn lasting trust, and equipping our dietitians to provide exceptional, personalized care. We make it happen , taking on big challenges with hunger and courage, deciding from data, holding relentlessly high standards, and accelerating impact through innovation. And we operate as one team , investing in outstanding people, debating openly, and committing fully once a direction is set. Foodsmart offers: 🏠 Remote-First Culture — Work from anywhere with a flexible schedule. 🏝️ Unlimited PTO — We prioritize rest and recharging. 🏥 Comprehensive Healthcare — Robust medical, dental, and vision coverage. 💰 Financial Wellness — 401k, performance bonuses, and equity options. 🥗 Personalized Nutrition — Access to our network of Registered Dietitians. Foodsmart is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive environment. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability, or any other protected characteristic. Compensation is determined by role, level, and geography. The stated range reflects the target for new hires based at our San Francisco headquarters; individual offers are tailored to work location, professional expertise, and educational background.

Chief Technology Officer

Remote
WaveRemote

Our mission We're making Africa the first cashless continent. In 2017, over half the population in Sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash. We're solving this by building financial services that just work: no account fees, instantly available, and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always work, you can still send money with Wave. In 2017, we launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments. Now, we have millions of users across 9 countries and are growing fast. Our goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent and that's where you come in... How you'll help us achieve it We're looking for a CTO who wants to own engineering end to end: the systems, the people, and the standards for a company whose work changes lives. Keep us fast as we get bigger: We deliberately favor fewer processes, simple designs, and deeply understood tools, because that's what lets a small team operate a system this important. Your job is to protect that as the headcount grows and ensure more ownership per engineer, and a clear view of where complexity is genuinely worth it. Own reliability: Wave is the financial system for millions of people who have no alternative. You'll set the standards for uptime, incident response, and how carefully we change things that move money and you'll be accountable when we fall short. Build and lead the leadership layer: You'll inherit 5 direct reports and an engineering organization of ~132 people including security, data and infrastructure. The CISO will also be reporting to you. You will be responsible for hiring, developing, and where necessary replacing engineering managers and directors. You'll be personally involved in senior hiring. Set our vision on AI. We're already shipping AI in production as autonomous voice and digital agents handle over 10 million customer interactions a month across West Africa and we're building tooling so engineers can use coding agents safely inside a large Python monolith. You’ll help us be truly AI forward, not just a pragmatic adopter. Support expansion. Wave is growing fast, and each new market brings new challenges and constraints. You’ll help us plan the right architecture and organisational structure to help us grow smoothly and consistently. Represent engineering to the company. Wave is unusually transparent: everyone sees monthly update from our CEO. You'll write clearly about what engineering is doing and why, to an audience that includes engineers, non-engineers, our leadership team, and, when needed, our regulators. Key details Reports to: Drew Durbin, CEO. Team: Around ~132 engineers across 5 teams (Payment, User-facing products, Internal, non-product teams and platform) plus 5 leaders. Engineering teams are co-led by a product manager and an engineering manager. Data science and analytics sits in the engineering organization; corporate IT does not for now. Stack: Python 3 with mypy on the backend, GraphQL API layer, Postgres and Redis, Kotlin/Jetpack on Android (our main client), Swift/SwiftUI on iOS, TypeScript and React on the web. Infrastructure on GCP, managed with Kubernetes and Terraform. Most backend work happens in a large Python monolith, deployed across multi-country architecture. Current in-flight work includes agentic developer tooling, a large scale migration of our databases, and some refactoring of our monolith. Location: This is a fully remote role. Candidates must be based in one of our talent hub countries (Spain, UK, East Coast of USA, Canada, Kenya, Ghana) or in one of our operating markets in Africa including Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, or Burkina Faso. Expect to travel to our markets a minimum of twice per year to stay close to local realities, products, teams and of course our users. Wave covers all costs. Compensation: Our salaries are competitive and are calculated using a transparent formula. For this role, depending on your level and location, we offer a salary of up to $356,500 USD, plus a generous equity package. Wave provides a yearly $1,200 stipend to support coworking meetups with teammates. Major benefits: Subsidized health insurance for you and your dependents and retirement contributions (both vary from country to country). 6 months of fully paid parental leave and subsidized fertility assistance. Flexible vacation, with most folks taking between 21-30 days exclusive of statutory holidays. $10,000 annual charitable donation matching. Process: The process runs up to 5 conversations, including 2 technical discussions. We want this to be a 2-way assessment: as much a chance for you to evaluate us as for us to get to know you. Along the way you'll meet our CEO, Head of People, Head of Product, both Engineering Directors, and a senior leader from one of our markets. Requirements You've managed an engineering organization of at least~100 people, including managers who manage others. You can describe how your own job changed as the org grew. You have a software engineering background and are good at it. You can still read code and follow a technical argument to the end. You've been accountable for a system where failure was expensive: money, safety, or regulated data. You've hired senior engineering leaders, and you've moved someone out of a role that wasn't working. You can talk about both honestly. You write well. Clear, short, and persuasive, for readers who aren't engineers. You have an actual point of view on AI in engineering: something you've tried, changed, or abandoned, not a plan to look into it. You believe in what we're building and can say why without being prompted. You might be a good fit if you Would rather run a great team than be the smartest engineer in the room, and don't feel a loss in that trade. Are comfortable being the person who says the unwelcome thing in a meeting, and can do it without making it personal. Change your mind in public when the evidence changes. Prefer the simplest system that works to the most interesting one. Care about what our users actually experience: how long a transfer takes on a bad network, what happens to a shop owner when a deposit fails and bring that up unprompted when discussing infrastructure. Take responsibility for outcomes rather than processes, including when the outcome is bad. Are drawn to a company that publishes its numbers internally every month, expects direct feedback in both directions, and would rather be embarrassingly honest than comfortable. "Chief Technology Officer hiring in 2026 is less about title alone and more about proof of technical judgment at company scale. Boards and founders tend to look for leaders who can connect architecture choices, engineering org design, security posture, product velocity, and commercial priorities without drifting too far from the details. The sharper CTO profiles usually show when they inherited complexity, what they changed, and how they brought engineering, product, and executive stakeholders with them."

How to Land a Chief Technology Officer Job in 2026

Chief Technology Officer searches usually center on trust before title. Companies want to see how you’ve made technical decisions under real business pressure, not just that you’ve managed engineers or owned architecture. Your application should connect technology leadership to company outcomes: platform reliability, product delivery, cloud cost control, security posture, data infrastructure, engineering hiring, technical debt reduction, or enterprise-scale modernization.

Position yourself around the kind of CTO role you actually fit. A startup CTO profile may need founder-level product judgment, hands-on architecture, fundraising support, and the ability to recruit the first engineering leaders. A growth-stage CTO search often leans toward scaling engineering teams, improving delivery systems, strengthening DevOps practices, and turning scattered technical choices into a durable roadmap. Enterprise CTO roles usually place more weight on governance, vendor strategy, cybersecurity, compliance, transformation programs, and executive communication with boards or business-unit leaders.

  • Show scope clearly: include team size, product surface area, infrastructure ownership, budget responsibility, and executive stakeholders where you can share them accurately.
  • Lead with decisions: describe architecture calls, build-versus-buy choices, migration plans, security tradeoffs, or platform investments you personally shaped.
  • Match the company stage: early-stage CTO applications should show product speed and technical range, while later-stage roles should show operating discipline, leadership depth, and risk management.
  • Use search filters carefully: separate true CTO roles from VP Engineering, Head of Engineering, fractional CTO, technical co-founder, and advisory listings so your effort goes toward the right mandate.

In 2026, a credible CTO search strategy means applying selectively to roles where your leadership pattern matches the company’s technical problem, whether that’s scaling a SaaS platform, modernizing legacy systems, building an AI or data function, or repairing engineering execution. LiftmyCV helps you find chief technology officer jobs that match your skills, experience, and preferred work style, then auto-apply to relevant roles faster.

Resume Tips

A chief technology officer resume should read like an executive operating record, not a long engineering history. Lead with the scope you owned: engineering headcount, platform scale, cloud spend, product lines, security posture, funding stage, board exposure, or global teams. For CTO jobs, AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, SOC 2, ISO 27001, data architecture, incident response, and vendor management matter when they connect to business outcomes.

Cut early-career implementation detail unless it explains a major architecture decision or turnaround. A CTO resume doesn’t need every framework used since 2026. Replace dense tool lists with proof of technical judgment, hiring discipline, product partnership, and financial ownership. If you’ve led due diligence, built a security program, reduced infrastructure cost, modernized legacy systems, or scaled engineering through growth, put those results near the top.

  • Weak bullet: “Managed engineering team and worked on cloud architecture.”
  • Stronger bullet: “Led a 42-person engineering and DevOps organization through AWS migration, reducing monthly cloud waste by 28% while improving release frequency and SOC 2 readiness.”

Present CTO experience in a clean executive format: summary, leadership scope, selected achievements, technical environment, and board or investor-facing work. LiftmyCV helps you create an ATS-friendly chief technology officer resume tailored to each job, so your skills and experience better match what employers are looking for.

How to Prepare for Interviews

Chief Technology Officer interviews usually test how you connect architecture, engineering leadership, product direction, security, and budget choices. Prepare a few concise stories from 2026 or earlier where you changed a technical strategy, inherited a fragile platform, reduced delivery risk, or rebuilt an engineering organization. Use numbers where you have them, such as uptime, deployment frequency, cloud spend, incident volume, hiring pace, or product launch timing.

Expect board-level and executive questions, not only technical depth. A common format is a strategy case: “You join after repeated outages and missed roadmap dates. What do you assess in the first 90 days?” Build an answer that covers system design tradeoffs, engineering structure, vendor decisions, security exposure, and communication with the CEO or product leader.

Also prepare for architecture reviews and leadership scenarios. Bring examples of technical debt decisions, build-versus-buy calls, compliance or data governance choices, succession planning, and how you handled conflict with product, finance, or sales without turning the CTO role into a pure engineering manager position.
