Chief Technology Officer

WaveRemote

Our mission We're making Africa the first cashless continent. In 2017, over half the population in Sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash. We're solving this by building financial services that just work: no account fees, instantly available, and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always work, you can still send money with Wave. In 2017, we launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments. Now, we have millions of users across 9 countries and are growing fast. Our goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent and that's where you come in... How you'll help us achieve it We're looking for a CTO who wants to own engineering end to end: the systems, the people, and the standards for a company whose work changes lives. Keep us fast as we get bigger: We deliberately favor fewer processes, simple designs, and deeply understood tools, because that's what lets a small team operate a system this important. Your job is to protect that as the headcount grows and ensure more ownership per engineer, and a clear view of where complexity is genuinely worth it. Own reliability: Wave is the financial system for millions of people who have no alternative. You'll set the standards for uptime, incident response, and how carefully we change things that move money and you'll be accountable when we fall short. Build and lead the leadership layer: You'll inherit 5 direct reports and an engineering organization of ~132 people including security, data and infrastructure. The CISO will also be reporting to you. You will be responsible for hiring, developing, and where necessary replacing engineering managers and directors. You'll be personally involved in senior hiring. Set our vision on AI. We're already shipping AI in production as autonomous voice and digital agents handle over 10 million customer interactions a month across West Africa and we're building tooling so engineers can use coding agents safely inside a large Python monolith. You’ll help us be truly AI forward, not just a pragmatic adopter. Support expansion. Wave is growing fast, and each new market brings new challenges and constraints. You’ll help us plan the right architecture and organisational structure to help us grow smoothly and consistently. Represent engineering to the company. Wave is unusually transparent: everyone sees monthly update from our CEO. You'll write clearly about what engineering is doing and why, to an audience that includes engineers, non-engineers, our leadership team, and, when needed, our regulators. Key details Reports to: Drew Durbin, CEO. Team: Around ~132 engineers across 5 teams (Payment, User-facing products, Internal, non-product teams and platform) plus 5 leaders. Engineering teams are co-led by a product manager and an engineering manager. Data science and analytics sits in the engineering organization; corporate IT does not for now. Stack: Python 3 with mypy on the backend, GraphQL API layer, Postgres and Redis, Kotlin/Jetpack on Android (our main client), Swift/SwiftUI on iOS, TypeScript and React on the web. Infrastructure on GCP, managed with Kubernetes and Terraform. Most backend work happens in a large Python monolith, deployed across multi-country architecture. Current in-flight work includes agentic developer tooling, a large scale migration of our databases, and some refactoring of our monolith. Location: This is a fully remote role. Candidates must be based in one of our talent hub countries (Spain, UK, East Coast of USA, Canada, Kenya, Ghana) or in one of our operating markets in Africa including Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, or Burkina Faso. Expect to travel to our markets a minimum of twice per year to stay close to local realities, products, teams and of course our users. Wave covers all costs. Compensation: Our salaries are competitive and are calculated using a transparent formula. For this role, depending on your level and location, we offer a salary of up to $356,500 USD, plus a generous equity package. Wave provides a yearly $1,200 stipend to support coworking meetups with teammates. Major benefits: Subsidized health insurance for you and your dependents and retirement contributions (both vary from country to country). 6 months of fully paid parental leave and subsidized fertility assistance. Flexible vacation, with most folks taking between 21-30 days exclusive of statutory holidays. $10,000 annual charitable donation matching. Process: The process runs up to 5 conversations, including 2 technical discussions. We want this to be a 2-way assessment: as much a chance for you to evaluate us as for us to get to know you. Along the way you'll meet our CEO, Head of People, Head of Product, both Engineering Directors, and a senior leader from one of our markets. Requirements You've managed an engineering organization of at least~100 people, including managers who manage others. You can describe how your own job changed as the org grew. You have a software engineering background and are good at it. You can still read code and follow a technical argument to the end. You've been accountable for a system where failure was expensive: money, safety, or regulated data. You've hired senior engineering leaders, and you've moved someone out of a role that wasn't working. You can talk about both honestly. You write well. Clear, short, and persuasive, for readers who aren't engineers. You have an actual point of view on AI in engineering: something you've tried, changed, or abandoned, not a plan to look into it. You believe in what we're building and can say why without being prompted. You might be a good fit if you Would rather run a great team than be the smartest engineer in the room, and don't feel a loss in that trade. Are comfortable being the person who says the unwelcome thing in a meeting, and can do it without making it personal. Change your mind in public when the evidence changes. Prefer the simplest system that works to the most interesting one. Care about what our users actually experience: how long a transfer takes on a bad network, what happens to a shop owner when a deposit fails and bring that up unprompted when discussing infrastructure. Take responsibility for outcomes rather than processes, including when the outcome is bad. Are drawn to a company that publishes its numbers internally every month, expects direct feedback in both directions, and would rather be embarrassingly honest than comfortable. Our team We have a rapidly growing in-country team in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Uganda, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon plus remote team members spread across the world. We're deeply passionate about our mission of bringing radically affordable financial services to the people who need them most. We foster autonomy for our employees. You'll own your projects at every stage, from understanding the problem to monitoring your solution in production. We raised the largest Series A in Africa in 2021. Our world-class investors, include Founders Fund, Sequoia Heritage, Stripe, Ribbit Capital, Y Combinator, and Partech Africa. We are on Y Combinator's top companies by revenue . How to apply Fill out the form below, and upload a resume in English and a cover letter describing your interest in Wave and the role. We review applications frequently and recommend that you apply to the role that most closely aligns with your skills, experience and career goals. Wave is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

Partner with product leaders to plan roadmaps and prioritize initiatives according to business value and technical feasibility. Monitor technology costs and ensure efficient allocation of engineering resources. Remove organizational and technical bottlenecks that slow down execution. Requirements Significant experience as a CTO, VP of Engineering, Director of Engineering, Head of Engineering, or in a comparable senior technology leadership role. Proven experience leading and scaling an engineering organization of approximately 40–60 people. Experience working with a portfolio of B2C SaaS products, subscription products, desktop applications, or mobile applications. Strong understanding of product engineering in a fast-growing, founder-led, or startup environment. Demonstrated ability to improve execution speed and lead organizational or technical change. Strong technical background with the ability to evaluate architecture and challenge technical decisions. Practical experience with Node.js, NestJS, Next.js or other SSR/SSG frameworks, Kubernetes, and AWS. Experience managing distributed and fully remote engineering teams. Ability to communicate technology strategy clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills. Fluent English. The Profile We Are Looking For This position will suit a technology leader who: prefers action and measurable progress over prolonged analysis; can bring clarity and momentum to a complex multi-product environment; is comfortable making difficult decisions and taking responsibility for their outcomes; understands both technology and product economics; can connect engineering teams, business leaders, and product stakeholders; remains technically credible while operating at the executive level. What the Company Offers A fully remote, full-time position for candidates based in Ukraine. Direct collaboration with the CEO and senior leadership team. Ownership of the technology strategy across 11 established B2C products. The opportunity to influence the structure, architecture, and operating model of a 40–50-person engineering organization. "Remote Chief Technology Officer searches in 2026 often hinge on scope more than title. Some companies need a hands-on technical leader who can still review architecture and unblock engineering teams, while others want an executive operator who can manage product tradeoffs, security expectations, vendor decisions, and distributed hiring. The clearest CTO postings usually spell out how much coding, people leadership, and board-level communication the role actually carries."

Marina's Market Take

Senior HR Leader & Lead Tech Recruiter

How to Land a Remote Chief Technology Officer Jobs in 2026

Remote Chief Technology Officer searches usually center on proof that you can lead technical direction without relying on hallway access. For a remote CTO role, your application needs to show how you’ve set architecture priorities, managed senior engineering leaders, worked with product and security stakeholders, and kept delivery moving across distributed teams. Vague executive language won’t carry much weight here. The sharper signal is a record of technical decisions that changed how teams shipped, scaled, secured, or maintained a product.

Position yourself around the type of CTO seat you actually fit. A startup CTO profile should emphasize product judgment, hands-on technical credibility, vendor choices, hiring plans, and the ability to turn limited engineering capacity into a working roadmap. A scale-up CTO profile should lean into platform maturity, engineering management layers, reliability, cloud cost discipline, security posture, and cross-functional planning with product, finance, and operations. For enterprise or regulated remote CTO roles, make governance, compliance, data protection, incident response, and stakeholder management easy to see.

  • Lead with scope. Show the size and shape of the engineering organization you’ve led, including remote or hybrid team structure, seniority mix, and reporting lines.
  • Show technical judgment. Name the architecture, infrastructure, security, data, or platform decisions you owned, and connect them to business needs.
  • Make remote leadership concrete. Reference async planning, operating cadences, documentation habits, performance management, and how you handled execution across time zones.
  • Target the right CTO lane. Prioritize listings where the company stage, product complexity, and leadership expectations match your background, whether founder-stage, growth-stage, or enterprise technology leadership.

In August 2026, a focused search should separate true CTO openings from VP Engineering, Head of Engineering, fractional CTO, and technical cofounder roles, since each one signals a different level of ownership. LiftmyCV helps you find remote chief technology officer jobs that match your skills, experience, and preferred work style, then auto-apply to relevant roles faster.

Resume Tips

For remote chief technology officer roles, your resume needs to read like an executive technology record, not a long engineering history. Lead with scope: engineering headcount, architecture ownership, product partnership, budget responsibility, security posture, cloud infrastructure, and board or investor communication. Remote CTO postings often reward evidence that you can manage distributed teams, set technical direction, and keep delivery moving without relying on hallway management.

Highlight experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, modern software architecture, DevOps practices, security and compliance programs, vendor selection, technical due diligence, and hiring senior engineering leaders. If you hold certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, CISSP, CISM, or PMP, include them only when they support the CTO mandate. Cut early individual contributor details, outdated languages, and dense tool lists unless they connect to platform decisions, scaling work, or technical leadership.

Present accomplishments with business context. A weak bullet would be: Managed engineering team and improved platform performance. A stronger bullet would be: Led a 28-person remote engineering organization across product, infrastructure, and QA while migrating core services to AWS, reducing release delays and giving the executive team clearer delivery forecasts.

Use a compact executive summary, then group proof under headings like Technology Strategy, Remote Engineering Leadership, Cloud Architecture, and Security and Compliance. LiftmyCV helps you create an ATS-friendly chief technology officer resume tailored to each job, so your skills and experience better match what employers are looking for.

How to Prepare for Interviews

Remote Chief Technology Officer interviews usually test how you lead engineering without sharing a room with the team. Prepare stories about architecture decisions, technical debt, security tradeoffs, hiring senior engineers, and keeping product delivery visible across time zones in 2026. Use examples with numbers where you can, such as reducing cloud spend, improving deployment frequency, cutting incident response time, or rebuilding an underperforming engineering org.

Expect a mix of executive and technical formats. You may be asked to walk through a system design decision, critique a scaling plan, or respond to a scenario such as, “A remote platform team is missing roadmap dates while infrastructure costs keep rising. What do you do in the first 90 days?” Build a few concise case studies that show the problem, the constraints, your decision process, and the result.

For remote CTO roles, also prepare for questions on async communication, engineering metrics, vendor selection, compliance posture, incident reviews, and how you partner with founders, product leaders, and boards.
